Currently, India recognises different religious personal laws that govern issues of marriage, divorce, adoption, maintenance and inheritance which apply differently to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs and Christians. These religious personal laws have long been opposed by feminist movements in India for enshrining gender discrimination in law (e.g., Muslim law prohibits the payment of maintenance to women upon divorce, Hindu succession laws privilege male descendants etc.)

In 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed an intention to abolish all religious personal laws, and implement a secular Uniform Civil Code to apply uniformly to all citizens, echoing the prior sentiments of far-right Hindu nationalist groups, including that of Modi's own party, the BJP.

For the purposes of this debate, heritage refers to valued objects and qualities such as (but not limited to) historic buildings and cultural traditions that have been passed down from previous generations.
